Kaysie's Garden

How did Kaysie's Garden grow?

Kaysie asked me to design a custom piece for her. Her father was a florist. He passed away in 2003. Kaysie has gotten tattooed with flowers in memory of him and she wanted some of these same flowers represented in her piece.

Kaysie sent me photos of her favorite flower tattoos and she stressed the importance of including the lily because her father had actually drawn it.

I chose the ones that translated best in stained glass and started a rough draft of the design.

After seeing the first draft of the design, Kaysie decided she wanted to include some type of border. The design was redrawn with all the details added and a border included. She was happy with the design and was sent a finalized version with flat color to indicate the basic color scheme for each area. Then, Kaysie chose the actual colors of glass to be used.

Next, the design was blown up to the actual size of 24" in diameter, the pattern printed out and the project begun.

Glass is cut by hand to fit each piece of the design.

Once all the pieces of glass are cut, they are smoothed and shaped more exact on the glass grinder.

All the pieces must be cleaned to remove the residue from the grinder. Once they are dry each piece is wrapped with copper foil tape. This provides a surface to solder the pieces together.

Once all of the pieces are "foiled", they are soldered together. For this piece, a patina was used to turn the silver solder black. Finally, a piece of lead "came" is wrapped around the outside edge to give it a finished look and loops were added to the top for hanging.

And after about 24 hours and 240 pieces of glass, that's how we got here:
